Just after lunch, Sam received a disturbing call from Annie, the secretary at Ethan’s firm. “All right, calm down, Annie. Tell me what happened. First of all, is everyone okay?”

“Yes, Tony did his best to calm him down, but he was having none of it. They’re in there now, shouting at each other. I can hear furniture being thrown around, that’s why I called you. Please, you have to come and help us. I have no idea how this is going to end.”

“All right. Sorry, you’re not making any sense. Who’s there?”

“Ethan’s brother.”

“Shit! Okay. I’m on my way. Keep safe. Leave the building if you feel threatened.”

“But what about Tony? I can’t leave him here, alone with that maniac.”

“We’ll be ten minutes. Hang in there.” Sam slammed her phone down and grabbed her jacket on the way out of her office in her haste to get to the scene. “Bob, we’ve got to go. There’s trouble. Claire, get a patrol car over to Ethan’s office, tell them we’re on our way.”

“Are you going to tell me what’s going on?” Bob demanded, tearing down the stairs after her.

“In the car.” Sam flicked on the siren and sped off before either of them had a chance to clunk their seatbelt in place.

“Christ, are you trying to get us killed? We need to buckle up first.” He snapped his seatbelt in.

Sam tugged at hers, and he finished securing it for her. “We need to get there quickly. Zane is there, apparently throwing his weight around.”

“Shit! I had a feeling he was going to be bloody trouble. Let’s hope he didn’t bring any weapons with him.”

Her head snapped round to look at him. “He wouldn’t dare, would he?”

“I bloody hope not. You know what these American cops are like, always think they’re above the law.”

His statement added another dimension to her need to get there quickly. If only this car had bloody wings.

She weaved in and out of the traffic at seventy miles an hour, thankful the majority of the roads between the station and Ethan’s office were long and straight. She noticed Bob’s knuckles going white as he clung on to his seat. “You’re safe with me. I promise not to take any unnecessary risks en route.”

“And you don’t think doing seventy through the town is an ‘unnecessary risk’?”

“It’s important we bust a gut to get there, Bob, Annie sounded terrified, told me that Zane is wrecking the office.”

“In that case, we’d better hope backup arrives swiftly.”

“Don’t fancy getting your hands dirty, partner, is that it?”

“I couldn’t possibly comment, not having seen the size of this guy yet.”

“I’d put him at around fifteen stone and six feet.”

“I’d be a match for him then, if it came to the crunch.”

“It won’t. I don’t want any violence. You hear me?”

“I think you’re preaching to the wrong person by the sounds of it,” Bob grumbled and crossed his arms.

Sam made an extra swerve, forcing him to grip the seat again, and suppressed a giggle at her antics.
